X-Tech Custom Black Marathon

Nicole Begg to show stuff in Timaru

By STU PIDDINGTON - The Timaru Herald (Oct. 13, 2009)
Speedskater Nicole Begg is back in Timaru for her traditional off-season but this year is different - the 22-year-old will get to show off her prowess against other world class competitors in the Asianic Inline Cup in her home town.

Begg's father Bill, who has also just returned from China, has confirmed the mid January races will be shared between Timaru and Waimate and he is expecting about 20 international skaters from Europe and Asia to compete.

His daughter will be one of the favourites to take out the marathon, having decided to switch her focus from the mainly European-based World Inline Cup marathon series to the startup competition in Asia.

Begg is also hoping she may get into some of the lucrative races in Korea through her new sponsor X-tech.

Korea has almost been a closed shop to overseas skaters, but with a powerful sponsor backing her, Begg hopes to be invited to selected races.

"It's a real change but I'm looking forward to it, Asia is the place where the sport is growing fastest."

She has arrived home after a successful world championships in China, where she won three bronze medals.

TRIPLE BRONZE: Inline speedskater Nicole Begg has arrived back from China with her world championship medals and some good news for local fans.

Begg was also honoured with the two trophies at the end of the championships for best woman skater overall on the track and road on points.

While disappointed to miss a world championship title, she was happy with her performances after a rollercoaster ride with injuries into the buildup.

"I hadn't had a lot of racing in the buildup and no set schedule so it was tough.

"Also it's always hard when you race as an individual against a number of countries with strong teams, who work together to get the medals."

Begg said her biggest disappointment was in the 15km on the track, when she was in a prime position for gold before being cut off.

"It was the first time over that distance.

"I felt good, with plenty left and then I just had nowhere to go."

Begg is also set to stick with skating despite it not making it into the Olympics.

She had given some thought to switch to cycling but has decided to stay with inline.

Begg's brother Wayne has also flirted with a change moving from inline skating to ice in the hope of qualifying for the Winter Olympics.

Despite two New Zealand records on ice in the 500m and 1000m, he will also be staying and joining the family in China, where he is in demand as a coach, trainer and "product" tester.

The 26-year-old looks set to trial skates and boots and give feedback while racing.

He, too, is looking forward to racing in Timaru in the New Year.

BONT SUCCESS 2009

by Bill Begg (Nov. 4, 2009)
HI ALL,

The 2009 WIC season finished as it started, with BONT winning, had it been a priority, it could have been an Interesting season of ladies racing between BONT & the runnaway Powerslide team, who opted to go to Incheon & collect all the big points & the racing was then over for WIC overall Team & Individual honours.

The Bont priority was to race in many different races & focus on 3 Ultra Marathon events also.

With the ladies team Nicole Begg won Rennes the opening WIC race & Kelly Martinez Margareta the Final WIC race for 2009.

The Inline 111 St. Gallen, Hallum Holland ( Hell of the North race ) & Le Mans 24 hour race were priorities, plus Heerde & a split team for many races.

With Nicoles serious Injurie, only races one WIC & 2 FIC races which she won & Kelly missing many events in Europe, due to Colombian trials committements, we were certainly not at Full strength througout the year, but we were still able to get Victories at Gross Gera & Heerde skate off.

Tamara's priority was to win the French Inline Cup which she won & also the Inline 111 St. Gallen, which she won for the second year in a row.plus 2nd in Hallam another priority.

Alexandra was set up for the SIC but finished 2nd overall winning Sursee & Bodensee, also the Linth marathon & Heerde Distance.

Kelly focus was on the World champs, but she unfortunately did not qualify but won in Heerde & Goss Gera & 3 WIC events Pampalona, Ostravia & Margarita. so a very good season with limited time in Europe.

Nicole Begg serious crash in Heerde, 2 laps from the finish cost her the distance overall & 3 months of the season, her priority was the World Champs & a good start to have a shot at the WIC, but won one out of 1 WIC races & 2 of the two FIC races, then also AIC races in Malaysia & Hong Kong, with 3 Bronze medals at Worlds & both the Overall World Champion Track & also for Road.

For the Ladies Tamara & Kelly 1st & 2nd Inline 111 km St Gallen & Kelly & Tamara 1st & 2nd in Hallam to give some Bont exposure to the European distributor Raps based in Holland, so a great outcome in the Endurance events.

In the mens the Argentine skater Ruebin Martinez gained a great Victory in the Inline 11 St. Gallen in a Solo breakaway of around 70 km, also part of the Le Mans team who were 2nd in the 24 hour teams race.

Livio Wenger the Swiss Junior whoes priority was the World champs, after a poor season by his standards including Europeans & World Champs, he redeemed himself by gaining the Silver medal in the Junior Mens World champs marathon event.

Wayne Begg won the AIC Hong Kong event.

So while the main goal was not the WIC, a very good all round performance by the Bont Wheels Ladies & the Enduro mens team, in 2009.

For all skaters a big thanks for your efforts & Cheryl for filling in while I had committements in Asia.

For 2010 there will be no Bont House in Weinfelden where many skaters were visitors from World wide, which will effect Weinfelden & International pressence in Switzerland, the Begg Family & Bont have parted amicably after a long association & with Bont Focusing indifferent priorities in the future.

Wayne, Nicole Cheryl & myself will be based mainly in Asia & Working for X-Tech, also the ASIAN INLINE CUP & International Coaching academy, with bases in Timaru New Zealand, Singapore & Haining China, as part of a big effort in the Asia Oceana Region, to promote skating.

We would like to thank those skaters in teams saince our coaching & management of WIC teams with Bont since 2004 & especially Sara, Inze, Alex & Soo Bont, for the opportunity & great support over many years.

Begg Family.
