Inline skating event for Timaru

By Stupiddington - The Timaru Herald (May 15, 2009)
Timaru looks set to hold another international sporting event with the new Asianic Inline Cup set to revive the Tour of Timaru early next year.

Timaru's world renowned speed skating coach Bill BeggTimaru's world renowned speed skating coach Bill Begg has pencilled in several events for South Canterbury in late January and is hoping to bring Asia's top skaters to New Zealand.

The 62-year-old Begg has been appointed as an executive consultant to the new Asianic Inline Cup.

The rights for the event are held by Hong Kong-based company Sports Performance International, of which Begg is a 10 per cent shareholder.

Begg said the four businessmen involved, from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore, were heavily involved with the manufacture of skating equipment, and wanted a long-term commitment from him.

"Inline skating is one of the fastest-growing sports in Asia and they are keen to challenge Korea's dominance in the sport.

"Our plans will take two or three years to really blossom but they are proposing marathon races throughout Asia and Australasia."

Begg said the group has opened doors to some prestigious locations already.

The Asianic Inline Cup had already raced on part of the purpose-built Formula One track in Singapore and on July 25 a midnight race is scheduled on Orchard Road.

Begg said that after the World Inline Championships the backers plan to have a half-marathon at Disneyland in Hong Kong or in the middle of the Happy Valley race course in early October.

Those involved were also happy for two rounds to be held in New Zealand and Begg, who grew up in Timaru, was keen to bring them home because of the history and strong new support base for skating.

Begg's daughter Nicole is former world champion, as is his wife Cheryl, and both have revitalised the sport in South Canterbury recently.

"A great course could be set up in Timaru's central business district, and Christchurch's Ruapuna Raceway would be perfect spot for a second marathon."

Between the two marathons Begg hopes to rekindle a mini-tour, taking skaters to possibly Waimate and Geraldine, as well as night racing on the Caroline Bay track.
Timaru's renowned hospitality would also come into play, with billets and sponsors needed.

Begg said a rough itinerary had been pencilled in, with the first Asianic Inline Cup marathon at Ruapuna Park in Christchurch on the evening of Sunday, January 24, with the second a Tour of Timaru a week later.

"It is hoped the following week three Asianic Inline Cup marathons can be held in Australia and together they could also attract world class skaters from Europe and South America downunder."

Eventually Begg hoped there would be up to 30 Asianic Inline Cup events every season, some of which would also be World Inline Cup events

Hi Skaters,

The Asianic Inline cup will be looking for new Venues for 2010, as New Zealand & Australia are on the cards late in January & early February, with the next step Indonesia February prior to Singapore & Malaysia.

Eddie Chua & Bill Begg two of the AIC organizors will visit Indonesia between the 12th to 16th June to View the Indonesian National Championships & talk to local officials about AIC venues for 2010. Also Bill will conduct some coaching Clinics.

There is the possibility in Australia to possibly hook up with the Tour Down Under Bike classic as far as some venues are concerned, also a trip to the land of the BIG WESTERN STAR in Perth, could be on the cards prior to an Indonesian Stage, with Malaysia , Singapore & Hong Kong, before going on to a big series of Bank track Saturday races & Marathons on Sunday in, China, Korea & Chinese Taipei, as the AIC works hard at turning dreaming into reality.

ASIANIC INLINE CUP PROGRAM

by Bill Begg (May 2, 2009)
Hi Skaters,

Sorry for late information & delays, but we have a number of confirmations & another strong probability which will take us through to 8 or 9 events involved in the Asianic Inline cup first season. Remembering that to encourage participation by emerging nations in the WIC, the Incheon nKorea & Zuzhou China events carry the standard 125 points for the winner & first placed 50 skaters earn points, that make them eligible for the overal ASIANIC INLINE CUP.

Other AIC Races have points carry as 60 points for the win & the top 20 score points, also the 500 meter sprint series prior to marathons & the bonus primes during the race count for the overall points.
  • 24th May - Incheon Korea WIC ( AIC Points )
  • 27 - 29th May - Xiajing China AIC ( will be confirmed in next few days, in this time span hopefully )
  • 25th July - Orchard Road Singapore AIC Midnight
  • 1 - 2nd August - Patrajaya Boulevard Malaysia ( a real top class course with reasonable 500 meter climb on each 5 or 6km lap ) Sat Aft or Sunday Morning, confirm in 1 week.
  • 26th August - Zuzhou China WIC. ( AIC points )
  • 1st October - Disneyland Hong Kong Half Marathon & 3 road races 500, 1,500 & 10,000 pts on 600 meter concrete circuit.( post Worlds, shop till you drop in Hong Kong )
  • 4th October - Zhu Hai China AIC ( 90% sure ) as double up for Hong Kong, 1 hr 15 min boat trip from Hong Kong & adjacent to Macau.
The ASIANIC INLINE CUP is proposed to kick off in Christchurch or Timaru New Zealand on the 24th January with an AIC Marathon, During the week a "Tour of South Canterbury" will be Held, with an AIC Marathon on the Sunday to Finish, races will include the Saturday Wiamate sports carnival, where they will race on the Saturday on the 400 meter Cycle track.

It is hoped the following week can start off in Australia, with a mid week race & a Double header Weekend.

(May 8, 2009)
Information on the Asianic Inline Cup, Midnight Orchard road Singapore, Followed the next Saturday in Patrajaya Boulevard Malaysia, go with the flow, join the International skaters, as they come together in Malaysia & Singapore.

How good is Eri from Indonesia, certainly good enough for a team racing WIC in my opinion, its highly on the cards that she will race fellow females amongst the Worlds best, so Eri will know just where she stands.

Daniel Chee Wee has delt to all the other Singapore men recently & won the 1st AIC, but the crafty Italians team tagged him at the next event as Scalari took it out with the well travelled Michelle second.

For sure a great double up weekend.

Ezyhealth City Skate is the first and largest mass participation night skate to be held in the heart of Singapore. At midnight of 25 July 2009, Orchard Road will be closed for skaters all of ages to “take to the street” for the first time!

Xiajing China confirmed

(May 12, 2009)
The Weekend following the Incheon WIC event, the Xiajing China Asianic Inline Cup event will be held. The Local Goverment offered some Incentive for a number of skaters, to join the Xiajing race. October slight Adjustment AIC

(May 12, 2009)
A very fitting program for the October AIC races after Worlds, to save problems, with Duel entries & re applying for Visa's the Asianic Inline cup races will be reversed.

On the Chinese National holiday of the 1st October an AIC full Marathon will be held at Zhu Hai, this is adjacent to Macau & only 1 hr & 10 mins by boat to Hong Kong.

On the 3rd October a half Marathon will be held in Hong Kong, with the Holiday week, the police have concerns about road restrictions at Disneyland Property, but if there are problems arising due to this, we can then move to the Happy Valley race course, with a 1,400 meter circuit, inside the race course.

It could still allow time for anyone to get back to Europe before the 4th Ovctober FIC & GIC final races.

So World Championships Finish in Haining with the Marathon, on the 26th September.but

So most leaving the 27th September, with the possibility of 4 days Tourism & site seeing available prior to Zhu Hai, if you want the trip by train its about 25 hours.

Overnight in Zhu Hai & a Macau trip after the Marathon on the 1st, then a short boat trip to Hong Kong, where you can Shop till you drop for a day, an early 8am half marathon start, gives you plent of time to prepare for outgoing flights later in the day, on the 3rd October.

For any teams such as Australia, South Africa, India, Parkistan, Singapore or New Zealand, that may come Via Hong Kong it provides a good Holiday & racing experience.

Cheers

ASIANIC INLINE CUP FINAL PROGRAM 2009

by Bill Begg (May 16, 2009)
Hi Skaters & Followers,

We thank you for your patience & understanding, as at very late notice, we brought together the much awaited ASIANIC INLINE CUP.

Now for some clarification.

With two events held already the 9 stage programme will continue next on the 24th May with the WIC event in Incheon., followed by the Xiajing Chinese AIC event, on the 29 th May. (Note changed to Friday for main part of Festival, 1 hour from Shanghai Airport, please advise, if you need met, race after 2 pm on Friday, track races 30th )

In its Initial year 2009 we could not define the overall criteria, till we could finally confirm the number of events, which has now been settled.
  1. With Incheon & Suzhou WIC events doubling as AIC events, to encourage AIC skaters to step up to a higher level. In these events the top 50 placegetters will earn points, as per normal WIC top class criteria from 125 points down as per the winner. ( As Revised Begg 2007 )
  2. For the overall Points & AIC winner, only 1 of the 2 Asian WIC events count for AIC points, with the worst performance discarded from the overall.
  3. For the 7 AIC races, the top 20 earn overall points, as per WIC class 1 (as Revised Begg 2007), with 60 points for the winner.
  4. For the 7 AIC events, the best 5 performances of the 7 count for the overall title, with the 2 lowest discarded.
  5. All Bonus points earned from 500 (Approx ) meter pre Marathon AIC sprints will remain, in the points for overall honours.
  6. Same as all sprint Prime & Hill prime bonus points, they will remain in the overll points, no matter if scored in a discarded event or not.
  7. Those skaters risking losing in the final result for the race, by contesting pre race sprint series & livening up the events by contesting sprint primes & hill primes, deserve rewarding.
  8. In summary 6 of the 9 events count for the overall title, 1 of the 2 Asian WIC races & 5 of the 7 ASIANIC INLINE CUP races.
