SsangYong Basel WIC 2007

World Cup «Leckerli» (SIC) in Basel

Switzerland. Basel, a city that beats differently, is positioned in the so called «Dreiländereck», the triangle formed by the three countries of Switzerland, Germany and France. The 165 000 inhabitants are proud of the culture, the economy and the sport, which take up a lot of space in their daily life. The Rheine river separates Kleinbasel from Grossbasel. The beautiful Münster as well as the different bridges characterize the town – and once in a year the skaters monopolize the biggest bridge: Basel World Inline Cup with start and finish line on the Wettsteinbrücke. On a lap of 5 kilometres the world’s best teams wheel through the inner town, the only team time trial within the world cup. Nothing doing here for technically weak or mentally soft skaters with no flair for teamwork. No picnic for athletes – but a sweet «Leckerli» for all spectators along the race course.

Basel WIC by Bill Begg
Hi Skaters,

Results are now known, so lets look at the factors involving the result, plus those who performed & those who did not live up to expectations.
MPC Rain
  1. The new supergrip MPC rain wheel, ended up having the roll to go with it, in the wet conditions.
  2. The Strength of World Marathon record holder Roger Schneider Switzerland and his Athleticum team mate Scott Arlidge from New Zealand, who shared the last half of the race leading, to ensure that the young N.Z. 3rd man finisher, did just that.
  3. The 2nd year that the big brother Rollerblade team, on paper the best team for this event, has had to be dissappointed, in finishing 2nd,with Big stars Shane Dobbin, Diego Rosero & Nicolas Iten. The Max Presti lead Bont Hyper team, would be content to grab 4th place,in an event not considered their forte.
SIC 07 Basel Speed Time trial Part 1

  4. The Kiwi factor, in the first 3 teams to finish in the mens of the 9 skaters 5 were from N.Z. Arlidge & Kay Athleticum, S. Dobbin Rollerblade, K.Dobbin & Micheal Powerslide, the 5th placed team World Inline center Spyrotiger Nation & Alchin, with Begg World Inline Center Bont in 9th placed team, running 6th, till Italian Conte fell on the last lap.
  5. A very good placing for the Berlin based Citius team, a very late & new team to the WIC ranks, with Casu, Cunco & Wilking doing the Job.
  6. The biggest dissapointment was Matter down in 8th place, the two Colombians Cifuentes & Garzon, being dropped early & playing little part in proceedings, which has left the fancied WIC contender Guyaders, chances way off the pace.
SIC 07 Basel Speed Time trial Part 2

  7. TNT did not get out of the blocks early & remained that way throughout the race for 12th, so Romani, another fancied contender, is left well back.
  8. Two other solid teams on paper, who would expect to be in the top 10 Timmerman Powerslide & Zepto ended up 15th & 16th, well off the pace.
  9. Bont Finland & Speedodrom were 18th & 19th in their first up Debuts, with all new WIC skaters.
    WIC Basel 2007 Teamtrial Team-Zeitfahren

  10. A Big TV screen in the Inline Village, showed most of the time direct live footage of the race.
  11. In the ladies race the well oiled Rollerblade Machine of Lardarni, Nueling, Llorens & Penan, kept together for the entire journey & thrashed their opponents, even having to slow down at times because of slower mens teams they were passing.
  12. Athleticum starting with 3 only, put in a very big effort for 2nd, with Gloor & Kuhn finishing with Stampfli lasting well into the race.
SIC 07 Basel Speed Time trial Part 3

  13. Allessi Powerslide & Ssangyong Jesa Bont could not make an impression on either of the first two teams, who were running on the new MPC wet weather wheel & were both left 3 mins behind Rollerblade & two behind Athleticum, WIC contender Nicole Begg, lossing two of her team early.
  14. Zepto & Codus Motus fought out a close battle for 5th & 6th, with World Inline Center Powerslide 7th ahead of Schankel & Henniez who were only 10 seconds apart.
A great event but the party rained on by the weather.

Basel World Inline Cup

Two-podiums for the men’s and ladies Sportvital Rollerblade World team. by Tanya Dobbin,

The weather forecast was for rain and that is exactly what we had in Basel yesterday at the WIC event. It rained on and off throughout the whole day and as soon as the sun set it became extremly cold. In the ladies side of the sport Sportvital Rollerblade World team had their second consecutive victory in the team time trial race in Basel. They skated a great race and all worked very hard together as a team. In the men's race, they didn't have much luck on their side yesterday with two of their team mates crashing in the race putting their race on hold a few things. But, because the men's team are so hungry for the victory they didn't let something like this stop them from finishing the race and giving everything they had to finish as best as they could. In the final results the men's team ended up finishin in second just ten seconds down from the winners.

WIC Basel Yann's report inside the race

Yesterday was in Basel "Swizerland" the second stage of the WIC. The race was a Team TT of 25km on a 5k circuit. The circuit was the same as the previous years, but the main difference was the wet roads. It rained all the day and the team were going to race in the rain what was going to be a tough . The Matter WIC team was starting second behind a sattelite team from World Inline Center. This race was a new experience for the team as the Colombians were going to do almost their first race in the rain and Ewen was contesting his first WIC events.
The Team Worldinlinecenter/Matter
Ewen Fernandez, Thomas Boucher, Jorge Cifuentes, Nelson Garzon, Yann Guyader.

THE RACE:
The team started well but unfortunatly we lost Nelson after 2k. As he was not used to skate in the rain, he slipped on a white line and crashed bad. We decided not to wait for him as we would have lost to much time.We did the first lap in quite a good time without being exhausted. We unfortunatly lost the second colombian, Jorges, who got dropped due to the rain too. After one and a half lap the race was going to be hell for us. After loosing both colombian Ewen which was taking good relay in the front till now got really big problem with his shean. It was not going to be easy at 3 but at 2 relaying in the front it was going to me mission impossible. During the second lap it was still ok, Ewen could follow without much problem. After the second lap the race was really not a pleasure for Ewen who didn't have the choice to finish as we were only 3. Ewen couldn't even follow us and was yelling sometimes as the pain was really really high. Thomas and i were waiting for him and all of us were loosing a lot of time. In the last three laps Ewen almost crashed every time we were skating on the stones before the finish hill. All of us were really frustrated as we felt really good and no one was exhausted, not even Ewen only his shean were the problem. In the last lap Athleticum passed us and we were able to follow them the whole lap without problem, but in the last k Ewen almost had to stop after the stones and we almost stopped too, were skating like recreationnal skaters. We crossed the line in 8th and we were expecting for a podium what would have been possible with the shape we had. On the name of Thomas and I we would like to thanks Ewen that killed hisself to go till the end and also the colombians that couldn't do much as they were not used to skate on a slippary surface. It would have been different on a dry floor but the race is the race and whatever happens we have to keep going. The team is really unlucky since the beginning of the season but if we all keep focused it should be better pretty soon.

Thank you all and see you next race in Rennes were Yann and Thomas got 3rd and 6th in 2006, so we can expect for a good result there.

CadoMotus World Ladies 6th in Basel WIC TTT

Angeline, Hilde, Jannitta and Bianca were in Basel (CH) this weekend for the unique World Inline Cup 'Team Time Trial' event. The TTT involves each WIC team setting out on the Basel city street course against the clock. Teams are set off minutes apart, and skaters work together to set the fastest Team time over the 25-kilometer course.
The CadoMotus World Team
In the Ladies event, all 4 members of each WIC team start the event, with the only significant rule being that each team's final skater to cross the finish line must do so within 5 minutes of the lead skater for that team.

Rain this weekend in Switzerland meant a wet Basel course for the TTT, and by the completion of the course by the last team, times on the scoreboard indicated a few different strategies had been used. In both the Mens and Womens event, there were some teams that finished with their entire team together - having used all athletes for the duration of the event, while others finished with 2 or 3 athletes together and their last skaters up to the threshold of 5 minutes behind the leader.
The CadoMotus World Team
In the Womens TTT, Sportvital RB and Athleticum teams set themselves apart by 1 minute from each other and 2 minutes from the 3rd placed team (Alessi) - while the other teams placed 3 through 10 with just seconds between them. The CadoMotus World Ladies were 6th, just 6 seconds from the 5th placed team and 50 seconds from Alessi in 3rd.
