Performance Enhancing Drugs

Performance Enhancing Drugs

by SkateMO (July 15th, 2010)
I know this topic has been discussed before but wanted to revist it.

As some background information, I am someone aspiring to be an elite level skater. I train hard and am doing all that I can to get better.

Just recently, someone approached me and asked me if was I taking any supplements (to aid my workouts), and my response was "no." This particular person is someone that has been around the skating community for a long time, and immediately begin spitting out names of every skater that is/has taken different supplements/pills that are out there.

So, to be honest, I found the conversation confusing. For instance, this person was naming so many different options and I had no idea which options were "ok" and which ones were illegal. Moreover, it just got me thinking about what I may be up against if I don't take supplements/enhancers (and other skaters are taking them).

To be perfectly blunt, I will never take something illegal...I refuse to break the ethics of the sport. But, I'm curious to know where the lines are in terms of what's fair and what's not. Moreover, how many skaters out there are taking supplements, etc and how many people truly cheat (i.e., break the obvious limits, such as using steroids, doping, etc).

Any feedback would be appreciated...

Hmm...wonder if its someone I know

That being said - I would think the line at least SHOULD be what is natural

For instance - Most anabolic steroids have testosterone derivatives - Male and female bodies produce this on their own (yes even female bodies, to a fractional degree)

Where as...If I am taking a supplement, and it gives me a super charge of say 200% Vitamin c.... well those are things your body doesn't produce.

Now - I would call this natural because...if I had the time..I could eat like..30 oranges and get the same effect (please note I citing example only..none of this should be construed as scientific)

I think in the end it comes down to what is natural, and what isn't. Is it something that you would normally ingest anyhow (which most supplements I know/have used concentrate) or is it something that you couldn't get any other way besides a drug/injection / whatever

My Advice - Do your homework - Some supplements while not illegal CAN AND DO mess you up , either throwing off your body, or as far as causing you to be restless. Think about it, any supplement super charges your body in one way or another, and you better make sure you use that energy some how

I take vitamin supplements. I take one a day multi-vitamins to make sure I'm getting enough vitamins for stuff I can't stand eating (ie. tomatos). But I do take Vitamin B12 for the energy aspect of it. Those are the only two things I could even think to take. The b12 out to give you somewhat more energy to skate I guess.

People who use anabolic steroids to gain a competitive advantage over others in any sport are just plain losers anyways.

When I was young I was taking Calcium, Magnezium and Vitamin substitutes, but it was purely because of financial reasons (tablets costed less than the amount of calcium from milk and meet, which i'd need). However I would never ever touch a substance I couldn't eat from food (that means even if my body produces something from certain food i wouldn't add it through suppliments because that is from my point of view considered illegal, and also NADA is considering that illegal as far as they can trace it, its another problem) . I do eat around 4-8 eggs per day when I'm on full throttle, I do eat a lot of meat, i somehow don't like raw vegetables so that was the reason for vitamin tablets which I didn't take for quite a while since I eat fruit (at least the one i'm not allergic on). I also drink a lot of natural juices. There is no problem to get enough carbs or proteins but it does indeed cost a lot more, and it takes more effort to stuff them down (thats why you need to eat almost whole day and in small quantities). This system is also better for your digestion as tablets can cause some strange reactions if you'd eat them instead of normal food mostly.

However I do think that most of top athletes do not take substitutes for natural food (yes i'm constantly looking for good virtues on people), since if you read their "blogs" or "journals" they tell you that they eat enormous amount of food each day (just see mantia blog, lance's book, etc.). That is also a reason I do believe that athlete can be in top shape without that (and I hope my trainees will prove it soon).

BIG NAME TO JOIN WADA LIST. Puello out.

by Bill Begg (July 17, 2010)
Hi Skaters,

Many have heard the rumour & many are asking who it is, its alleged a big name South American Skater has tested positive & official exposure of the cheater should be made public within the next 24 hours, or else there is some attempted form of a cover up..

Wada have been very active in our sport & its good to see, my daughter has had two out of competition drug tests this year. One day back from Europe & spending the night in a Christchurch motel with her partner before she travelled home she got a visit, so lucky she had kept right up to date with her location, with a change of plans, or it would have been a strike out.

Its not good for our sport, but cheating Body Tamperers robbing others of World medals is the worst thing of all & a very high profile skater caught, might br a good deterrent.

Puello Caught, Canada for result checking.

by Bill Begg (July 21, 2010)
Hi Skaters,

Some of the top Skating sites & outlets may have used the Word Injured, but the injured parties are the ones who have finished behind her, at least the sample is going to Canada to be checked, I would hate the beaker to be droped off a table or something & no B test.

news paper that she is positive

Jersy Puello world champion suspended for alleged doping

    From Colombia.com (18/Jul/2010)
world champion racing skating Colombia, Jercy Puello, was suspended for a month while investigating a suspected case of doping.

Jersy PuelloPuello must await the results of a test sample to a laboratory in Canada after a positive result in a drug test, allegedly by ingesting a diuretic, when he competed in a valid nationwide survey in the Valle del Cauca.

For this reason the medical committee of the Federation skating Colombia recommended his suspension for one month, in which she was subjected to tests to determine the responsibility for that outcome.

If the skater show signs of an adverse outcome, it will be declared as positive (on doping) and proceed to a penalty. Meanwhile, the athlete is disqualified from participating in any national and international competition until it becomes clear to you.

The athlete was excluded from the Colombian skating team is currently involved in the XXI Central American and Caribbean Games, but initially said he was not an injury. In its place was called the multiple world champion Cecilia Baena.

Cartagena skater won in March a new mark in the 300-meter time trial with a time of 26,300 seconds in the South American Sports Games (Odesur) of Medellin, 2010 and broke the previous world record of 26 426 young people who held the South Korean So Yeong Shin since the World Cup held in 2009 in Haining (China).
