WORLD INLINE CUP Ferrara Class 1 (1°maggio Ferrara Inline)

The following week-end a WORLD INLINE CUP race will take place in Italy again after many years without WIC races. And the location is not any ordinary town in Italy, but Ferrara with its medieval centre.

Ferrara is situated in northern Italy in the eastern part of the Po Valley in the region Emilia Romagna. It is the capital city of the province with the same name and diocesan town and lies on the right banks of the river Po, of which a branch channel, the Po di Volano, runs right through the middle of the town. Ferrara is an economic and cultural centre, as well as a big university town. Its university, one of the oldest in Europe, was founded in 1391. Ferrara has only been founded in the Middle Ages and thus it represents one of the few Italian cities without Roman roots. Almost its whole ancient walls, mainly built in the 15th and 16th century, have been preserved. The urban structure of today goes back to the 14th century when the town was governed by the Este family. The extension of the town centre, prepared by the architect Biagio Rossetti, is an example of modern town planning worldwide. For its historic town centre Ferrara has been qualified by UNESCO as World Heritage Site.

Next week-end the top athletes of inline sport will come together in Ferrara for two days to take part in the races of the WORLD INLINE CUP. Everything has been initialized and organized from the woman and man of action, Sara Rambaldi and Mirko Rimessi of “Vitamine & Co.”, who are at the same time team owners of the Ferrara WIC teams. With the traditional track races “Trofeo del Lavoro” on May 1st and the WIC Ferrara Marathon on Sunday 2nd May, the two days will be characterized by the competition between the most important and best teams worldwide, who will be there in Ferrara. Especially the marathon race - even open for the fitness and amateur athletes - will be noticed considerably all over Europe and will certainly have many participants. Organizers, the government as well as the media stand behind this event and show this with their support and presence.

We are very glad to welcome everybody in Ferrara, so let's say to all fans of inline sport: “Benvenuti a tutto del mondo a Ferrara - Ferrara welcomes the World!

Ferrara

FerraraLying in the middle of the Po Valley, Ferrara still has the atmosphere of the past, which blends in harmoniously with the lively atmosphere of the present. Ferrara's most famous image is certainly that of its grand Renaissance, the age of splendour of the Estense court, which has left indelible signs everywhere: in the colossal Addizione Erculea project, in the impressive pictorial cycles belonging to the Quattrocento and Cinquecento and in the Last Judgement by Bastianino. From 1995 on, UNESCO has included the historical centre of Ferrara in the list of World Cultural Heritage as a wonderful example of a town planned in the Renaissance and still keeping its historical centre intact. The town planning criteria expressed in Ferrara had a deep influence on the progress of town planning in the following centuries.

WORLD INLINE CUP Ferrara 2010

track competition Saturday

Meeting of the world's best...

Many skaters - from the youngest up to the top athlete – had come to the venerable road circuit “Piazza Ariostea” on Saturday. This beautiful open track in the centre of the Italian city Ferrara, 40 km away from Bologna, offered the backdrop for the inline specialists starting under good weather conditions like in early summer. This 3rd station of the WORLD INLINE CUP 2010 and the 2nd stage of the track competitions attracted hundreds of skaters and thousands of spectators to Ferrara.

The day started with the qualifying and elimination races of different categories and ended in the afternoon with the finals in the supreme disciplines: 500 m and 20,000 m. The top athletes showed an exciting event and made their race. The 20,000 m elimination heat presented inline sport at its best. The favourites were in good shape and fighted hard for every centimetre, sometimes even very physically. In the end, the Powerslide Team, starting with its best members, dominated the race almost completely like in a team competition. Thus Fabio Francolini, Yann Guyader as well as Andres Munoz are the men on the first positions.

So the best teams, already participating completely in the track races, showed excellent competitions. This was good publicity for their brands and the inline skating sport.

Powerslide/Matter Racing Facebook

The PS/Matter team will be racing in Ferrara Inline for the WIC this weekend. Racing there will be Yann Guyader, Matteo Amabili, Scott Arlidge, Felix Rijhnen, Kalon Dobbin, Fabio Francolini, and Cecilia Baena Guzman

Unfortunately it looks as if PS/Matter's sprint star Kalon Dobbin won't be racing in Italy this weekend because he is sick. Kalon has decieded its better to rest up, and prepare for the WIC in Incheon in a few weeks time.

Andres munoz wins another 500m in Ferrara. That's a clean sweep of all sprint events in Europe this spring!

Checy baena wins the ladies 20,000m elim. She finished with a kick of speed that none of the Italians could match.

The PS/Matter boys put on a show of strength in Ferrara tonight in the elimination. They controlled the front, then swept the podium. Fabio francolini took a popular win his home country.

Wheels of choice in Ferrara, Italy: Defcon F1. It's been a great spring track season for PS athletes on the defcons.

WIC Ferrara cancelled. The judges stopped the race halfway through because it rained, and they deemed the conditions unsafe. PS/Matter isn't happy about this. We had 3 guys in the front group plus 2 more in the next group.

"A marathon that hadn't been one"

After the beautiful weather and the excellent competitions on Saturday, this Sunday turned out to be a rather dismal one. Dark clouds and even trouble was brewing over the Arena Piazza Ariostea. The organizing committee had done everything beforehand to present a track that was worth a world cup. But they hadn't expected such inadequacy like the absence of some marshals. Thus, the race management was forced to find new security personnel to allow the participants to go on the track.

Therefore, the police inspector in charge didn't allow the start for a long time because of this situation, esp. because of a crossroads to the hospital that wasn't safe. Then the race could start with a considerable delay but the referees hadn't grouped starting blocks, which is against the rules, and let all 400 participants start simultaneously. Although the race was neutralized after the first lap, some athletes of the non-WIC categories pressed ahead to get a place in the first line with the top athletes. But, as it had begun to rain shortly after the start, the road surface had become very slippery and caused many accidents in the new cobblestone roundabouts. Especially the skaters, who were not so much experienced, couldn't hardly control the situation and pulled down one or another professional. Even though outdoor sport is used to cope with rainy weather, the referees had come to the hardly comprehensible decision to break off the race after three laps.

After this ruling - a unique one in the history of inline sport - it immediately stopped raining and the road became dry within a few minutes. It goes without saying that the teams, coming from all over the world, were very disappointed and the officials had their hands full to calm them down. Now it is essential to find out, if the decision of the referees was justified and how the teams can be recompensed for their expenditures by the organization.

The IGUANA Marketing AG, who holds the rights and licence of the WIC, regrets this incident very much and will help to reappraise it thoroughly. However, want to express our thanks to all athletes and teams for their extremely fair and sportsmanlike behaviour.

Special thanks to the WIC teams of

for being exemplarily fair as well as to all others, who cannot be mentioned by name here, but have been just as fair and sporting as the others.

Why to come to Ferrara
Ferrara has been an important center of the middle age and one of the most sumptuous courts of the Renaissance.

From here his particular physiognomy: from the harmonious and inimitable sum of the intrigue of shady and irregular roads of his medieval districts and the airy, bright and geometric spaces of the Renaissance age. The one and the other ones studded of splendid buildings, houses, churches, plazas, roads, gardens and art works preserved in his innumerable museums, that constitute one of Ferrara’s greatest attractions.

Ferrara is a silent city, livable, where he quietly walks in the daytime and at night, afoot or in bicycle, without fear some, reliving to every footstep the magic atmospheres of the past.

Ferrara is one of the most important City for art and culture in Italy, thanks above all to his Palazzo dei Diamanti, a center of prestigious art exhibitions, and from the high quality seasons of the Teatro Comunale.

Ferrara is also a center of the oldest historical-rievocative event in the world, the Palio of St. George (1259), it’s the perfect location of a great street musical event like the Ferrara Buskers Festival and is site of a great kermesse devoted to the world of the hot-air balloons, the Ferrara Balloons Festival.

From 1995 the UNESCO has included Ferrara as City of the Renaissance and his Po Delta in the list of World Cultural Heritage. This recognition has authoritatively attested the value of the City and his territory as an unique urban and naturalistic landscape in the world.
