Oxford to Cambridge 89 Miles

roadskater.net にイギリス版 A2A と云える Oxford to Cambridge 89 Miles のビデオが紹介されていました。これは British Heart Foundation の Bike Ride 企画にインラインスケートが便乗して実現したようです。調べてみると、昨年は London to Brighton Skate でしたが、今年は London to Paris Bike Ride なども実行しています。

Here's a link to a video of a British Heart Foundation skride that one of our new English A2A paceline buddies skated two weeks prior. He and David skated much of A2A together.

Myself and a few mates thought it would be a good idea to pioneer a 89 Mile skate from Oxford to Cambridge, piggy-backing the British Heart Foundation Bike Ride. This involved a 4am rise, 5am bus, 6:30 arrival in Oxford for a 7am departure. The skate took us approx. 11 hours, getting in at 6pm.

The route took us through great scenery and landscapes, many small towns hazarded with the odd cattle grid, long hills and rough surfaces. It was a long day, but we made it in the end.

Arriving gratefully to a victory beer, which I promptly spilt :)
Not sure if it is a route I would do every year, but it was an experience :)

The Oxford to Cambridge skride is 89 miles and I hadn't realized how close to my old home they must've skated until I saw them tackling the cattle-grates at Woburn Abbey. Woburn Abbey is a stately home turned safari park, with all kinds of zoo animals roaming wild through the road safari section: zebra, elephants, lions, tigers, primates, camels, buffalo...

There's even a section called Tiger Woods.

Here's a mapmyride.com entry of the route. No wonder Paul at A2A said it was hilly! They must've gone across, or close to, Dunstable Downs.

Oxford to Cambridge a superb success

Over 1300 riders took part in the Oxford to Cambridge Bike Ride on Sunday 27 September 2009. Even though autumn had certainly arrived, the event took place on a truly beautiful sunny day.

One of the early riders, Dave Friend had a chat with BHF he said:

“My name's Dave and I took up riding again 20 years ago in order to lose weight and get fit. I turned 50 and was overweight, drank too much and didn't take any exercise. My dad had died of a heart attack at the age of 49 and I thought I'd better take control of this situation.

It was just plain common sense. I cut out the fat, cut down the booze, started eating lots of salads and fruit, and dusted off my bike to take in some regular exercise. Now at 70 I'm 3 ½ stone lighter and much fitter. Indeed, I was one of the first arrivals on Sunday! I’ve been taking part in the Oxford to Cambridge Bike for the last four years and absolutely love it. It’s a perfect distance of 89 miles making it no stroll in the park but still very enjoyable.

If you are feeling unhealthy take control today and change your life. Eat well, take regular exercise, book yourself into a BHF event and give yourself something to strive for.”

If you, like Dave, took part in the Oxford to Cambridge Bike Ride we'd like to thank you for your participation. All we ask now is that you ask you family, friends, colleagues and neighbours to dig deep for sponsorship and help the British Heart Foundation fight heart disease. You could be saving a life this Christmas.
