Asia Oceania Inline Cup

Bont Skates Message Board and News

INLINERS TIME TO ATTACK ( Must Read )

by Bill Begg (Nov. 18, 2008)
Hi All Skating Fraternity,

Famous Australian VFL coach Ron Barrassi, put people into 3 classifications :-

Those that WATCH it Happen.

Those who say WHAT Happened.

Those who MAKE it Happen.

No doubt our sport is in serious need of the MAKE it Happen people right now, in hard economic times our sport has been one that has boomed, as people want to get out & about & not sit around & be depressed by Radio & TV news on the state of the World. Lets look at some make it happen examples, right in front of us.

So the situation is ripe for us to succeed & not sit around & worry, we need to move full steam ahead, with Visionaries at the Helm, if you have a public hall, get some disco lighting & revieve the public fun sessions, to bring more people in contact with our sport.

In Switzerland we have had World Inline Center Dani Grab, who has put more teams into the Swiss Inline cup than anyone, last year was not the best for anyone, a lot of it was due to the skating fraternities own making. So Dani's motto for 2009 is " I ATTACK" so instead of waiting & risking his trust in others, he initiated a B Grade racing series, to provide much needed racing to keep the skaters interest, also a new sole of the foot moulding system,to back up his 3 D foot moulding equipment,in search of providing the best possible boot for his customers.
Thats one example of a very successfull skating Equipment outlet, who intends staying successfull.

Another example is a group of Business People Joerg Dietrich from Zepto has been in touch with, who are now building a new state of the art venue at GEISINGEN in Southern Germany about 1 hour from the WEINFELDEN complex.

Joerg & his partner Eginhard started off with a team, that was not rated, while they have seen the demise of many other Hi Flyer teams, they have continued to build a step at a time, always providing good Photo's & information via an active website & keeping their sponsors well informed & onside.
Zepto now head towards 2009 with a team that could well finish on the WIC overall podium, with now securing the top available recruit Alexander Bastidas & revitalizing the career of Colombian speedster NajibTobon, they have plenty of additional fire power, added to this a new facility underway & all the team based together in the one home, they are certainly not downsizing or heading backwards, but its fullsteam ahead & best wishes to them in 2009.

In Europe we have the very successfull running of a number of National Inline Cup Marathon circuits, with two in recreational Powerhouse Germany, also France, Austria, Switzerland & Italy, with some events in Germany, Switzerland, & France also doubling as World Inline Cup events also. This Model has to be expanded around the World.

With a number of our sponsors not feeling they are getting valued exposure for their money, perhaps a true World wide competition will attract more International sponsors & help save our valued within the industry equipment sponsors, who are mostly struggling at present.

In recent years our sport should have blossemed & spread its wings, but unfortunately it had not, the WIC had whittled down to Europe & a corner of Asia, I for one was embarressed about telling media we were a World cup, when in fact we were far from it with very little support from North America & South America, Myself along with a few others, brought the World to the WIC, as for various reasons the WIC could not get to them, so many skaters from new countries became involved with the WIC & finally in 2008 we had the South American Invasion of Europe, mainly thanks to the services of Bont & there Colombian agent.

So we had Colombia grabbing the Lions share of WIC victories, the same story as the World Championships, but with WIC victories going to new CountriesVenezuela & Eucuador as well, to really put South America on the WIC Map.

But instead of shrinking we must be bold & go bigger & better than ever, sponsors paying for some teams toperform for only 5 months of a calender year is not good enough, for investors looking for maximum exposure. So I am going to go really out on a limb here & paint the picture that I have had in mind for a number of years & expressed a number of times.

I am not the only one looking for more expansion I have meettings In the next few days, with representatives from 4 different Asian countries, we need to revolutionize the sport & it can be done within the WIC overall stucture, but we have to move now, or we are in grave danger of shrinking. YES we can not sit around & wait,we have to be like Dani Grab & Joerg & his Zepto supporters.

Now here is my idea of what I believe needs to happen, we need to Involve the World, to shake things up, but please read it all, before you shoot the messenger.

1./ Basically all December Free, or first weekend December end South America at latest for WIC events.

2./ Starting no sooner than Mid February Oceania.

3./ Europe carry on as is with no WIC events prior to Mid April.

4./ But we create an Asia Oceania section of the WIC, basically class 1 marathons & points, with the WIC top class events in the season as we know it, later on, there could be many Double up weekends, preferably Friday Evening & Sunday afternoon if possible, but Double up weekends are usually no problem, but venues not to far between.
Asia Oceania Inline Cup
5./ Example
  • 14 /15 February - New Zealand 2 events. Say eg Auckland & Hamilton.
  • 21/22 February - Australia - 2 events say eg Melbourne & Canberra.
  • 28/01 March - Indonesia
  • 07/08 March - Singapore / Malaya Double
  • 14/15 March - Philliphines.
  • 21/22 March - Taiwan
  • 28/29 March - China 2 events
  • 05/06 April - Zhu Hai China & Hong Kong
Now Korea has there own Marathon Circuits & Infrastucture, but for Instance within the WIC programme two or 3 events will be top class events & these will be included for the overall area championship of Asia / Oceania, with possibly China, Korea & Singapore having a Top class event.

So with a likely 12 to 15 races, you would drop your worst 3 or 4 performances for Individual overall, while all events counted for teamoverall, with your best 3 performed skaters.

This is a scenario, there are other countries like India & Tahiti that we need to try & accomodate,if they are ready to move ahead.

6./ Now the America's Scenario. example
  • 10 /11 October - New York, possibly if timming right with the New York 100, to add a different type marathon race.
  • 17/ 18 October - Miami.
  • 24/25 October - Mexico
  • 31/01 November - Venezuela
  • 07/08 November - Cali Colombia
  • 14/15 November - Meddellin Colombia
  • 21/22 November - Chile
  • 28/29 November - Argentina.
There are plenty of other countries such as Costa Rica, Cuba & Ecuador that could be involved & mid week or double up weekends can be utilized. USA & Colombia, amonst the Worlds most powerfull nations deserve 2 weekends & one race in Each country should at least be a full WIC event, whileother countries in the region, would also have the capacity for a full WIC event.

7./ Now before everbody screams who can afford to pay for all this travel, consider this, most the product brands have skaters in many countries, they are supporting in one way or another.

Like most major cycle teams, often some are not racing & others go to different races, now each Team chasing World cup honours, can only have 4 in any race, but with a roster of 10
skaters.

8./ eg for Instance BONT WHEELS ladies team currently 2 from Colombia, 1 Argentina & 1 New Zealand. the core members, so up to another 6 maximum, so to get good points, you would want to try & have at least 3 in each race., so you would be looking at cost wise also.

So Nicole races Asia /Oceania races in Australia & New Zealand with a New Zealand Skater & one Asian skater ( Say Singapore, so a 5th Bont Skater ) then up into the Asian sector
With the Singapore skater & then a Chinese, Taiwan & Korean skater share the duties also, so now the team has the 6th,7th & 8th skaters.

So While the Asian /Oceania leg is Finishing the other 3 core team members are in Europe & the ones trying for the GIC ,GBC & FIC are racing in there races,

Now eg one Colombian wants to focus on the Worlds & will miss a number of WIC Europe races, so a Dutch Girl is the number 9 team member, so there are 4 on hand for the European WIC races, also theNew Zealand member comes to Europe toprepare for Worlds, so they have another option, to cover for injuries or double up events.

Now with 3 South Americans in the team on the way back from Europe & a very tough competitive stretch we have the number 10 member from the USA in the team, who can be utilized in the America's section, to finish the season strong two members are in the running for overall WIC so need toboth do the WIC Top Class events.

This kind of scenario would leace teams well positioned in case of Injuries or call up for National team duties, the WIC Top Class events count for overall & the others for the Continent titles, plus the Top Class events in the Continent.

9./ So like the Frech, Swiss & German Inline cups, there are now two Continental cups,The Asia/Oceania & the America's.

10./ Withmany skaters getting the chance to mix it & team with the Worlds best,it will surely help develope our sport,World wide Advertising for the sponsors also.

11./ Africa somehow needs fitted in, but with only South Africa really up to it,it would not be easy, but a competition embracing the World,it would need to be in the European season probably.

Food for thought, lets hear your Views
