WIC first stage: Zug (Switzerland) for the opening marathon

The home place of the team of Rollerblade MPC World will be the scene of the first stage of the WIC 2008! One lap around the lake for a first crown this season...
by Vincent Esnault, Apr. 15, 2008
And the entire team of Rollerblade MPC World ready to start after one week of preparation in Italy. Now, each team mate knows the other and they are ready to enter this new season.
WIC Zugersee
The first race together will then be a WIC stage. This kind of situation normally suits to the team, as well as the configuration of that race: Zug is a point to point race, quite plane, with some long up hills in the middle of the marathon. But usually, the race finishes in a massive sprint...

This could be the case this Saturday, and it would suit to the Italian sprinters of the team (Simona Di Eugenio, Laura Lardani, Francesco Zangarini or Luca Saggiorato). But if it rains, the race will be much more physical: Jana Gagner, Cathy Penan, Colombians Jorge Cifuentes and Diego Rosero could have their chances.

And, last but not least, Nicolas Iten prooved in a recent past he was THE specialist of the first WIC stage (he won in Seoul in 2007) and of the wet WIC stage (he won in Berlin in 2007).

I Have Arrived

Monday, April 14, 2008
Last night I arrived safely in Switzerland. Tamara Llorens arrived from Argentina today and Cecilia and Alexandra are due to arrive in the next few days. The cold temperature was a bit of a shock to the system after the hot summer we have had in New Zealand but it should warm up in the next week. The first race of the World Inline Cup is in Zug this Saturday.

The first Salvo has been fired by the big Guns tonight, for Press purposes WIC Guru Coni had the top shots asked two Questions about there expectations & where they would finish overall in 2008. Even the usual cocky Jann Guyader was not forthcoming, but most focused centered on the World Super Star Joey Mantia Lugino Answer & Cecilia Baena Bont Wheels. Munoz Colombia could be the Big Danger man.

Joey Mantia Lugino Answer
It was a big pack in the sprint after a very fast race. And you can not win clearer. The famous Joey Mantia (USA) wins the first World Inline Cup race in 2008 around the lake of Zug. It is a small sensation, the new formed team Luigino Answer Wheels with the star of the decade Massimiliano Presti and Joey Mantia. They are also number 1 in the team ranking (4 mates in the top 11).

At the women's race, the Colombian sprint specialist Cecilia Baena showed her skills.

Zug had a beautiful days weather for this years first world cup, nice sunny day for a fast lap of 40km around the lake. Many Colombians added to the group this year and the speed of the race was too high for any significant breaks. The race was a fast and busy sprint finish featuring Joey Mantia once again 5 meters in front of other teams easily holding them off. Rollerblade Saggiorato in second and Max Presti from Lugino in third (unofficially)

The ladies peleton stayed close together until the second climb around the lake where the Bont team attacked but due to the good amount of strong teams it was caught and as with the men it was a sprint finish. The Bont team proved too strong getting the top 2 placements with Baena and Begg on the podium. The team Cado Motus girls finished in the main bunch doing well considering they arrived from Australia yesterday.

WIC Zug: Saggio on the podium

Luca Saggiorato captured a beautiful second place in Zug last Saturday. The Italian from Rollerblade MPC World was perfectly conducted by the “blue” train in the last meters of the first World Inline Cup of the season.
Vincent Esnault, 21.04.2008
Luca SaggioratoThe only thing that moved in Zug for the first WIC of the season was the finish line (50m farer). Otherwise, this marathon is still one of the most beautiful (the lake, the mountains, a perfect weather with blue skies and 16°C) and one of the fastest (more than 43km/h for the men’s race)! As it was the opening stage of the World series, each athlete was in a good shape and each team wanted to come back with good results; so that either in the women or in the men’s races, it was impossible to escape. Both of the marathons finished in some massive sprints!

After two kilometers neutralized in the city of Zug, the men’s marathon really got started: it was about 17:05. The pack came back in Zug a little bit more than 55’ after! Fast? Yes, of course! But there were quite all the WIC team at the start and the roads around the lake are definitively planes and perfect for inline speed skating! In the first kilometers, the team mates of Rollerblade MPC World only had to care about the little breaks and the risks of fall. “We decided to make the race hard after the main difficulty – an uphill at about mid-race – and I escaped” said Diego Rosero after the race. The Colombian broke alone, but he was joined by four other skaters, including Massi Presti and Yann Guyader.

The break went on for 6kms, but the opponent teams chased it down, so that the pack was reconstituted after 22kms of race. In the ultimate kilometers, some other skaters tried to go away, including Nicolas Iten. But it was impossible to prevent from a massive sprint… At three kilometers to the end, the trains appeared in the peloton. Jorge Cifuentes, Nicolas and Diego, who made many efforts during the race, managed to make a perfect lead out for the two sprinters, Luca Saggiorato and Francesco Zangarini. Nicolas Iten was filmed by the national TV

Unfortunately, Jorge fell under the red flame, after having doing his job. But the team managed to be powerful enough to place three athletes in the top 10: Saggio finished second, Zanga five and Diego six. They were just passed by the team mates of Luigino Team: Joey Mantia was the strongest and won the race in the time of 55’51, whereas Massi Presti took the bronze.

No girl in the Top 15...
The women race also went on fast: they finished the 40kms in 1h08’36. The four team mates of Rollerblade MPC World managed to stay together till the end of it. “They only made a mistake at the end, explained Alain Nègre, their team manager. There is a big island and there were many trains, and the girls did not manage to find the good way.” A little mistake and no one of them in the top 15...

The finish straight line is quite tiny in Zug, so that when you’re not at a good place, you cannot move to the head; things will be quite different for the next stage of the WIC in Sursee. Usually, it’s not good news when you don’t start the season with top results. But everybody knows the girls are strong and experienced enough to have a positive reaction in the future WIC marathons!

WIC Showdown in ZUG (CH) Inside view

by Pascal Briand (Apr. 23, 2008),
Zug was the 1st race that all POWERSLIDE PHUZION team members race together in full strength. At the Easter holidays we had a training camp in Nantes (FRA), the home base of Arnaud Gicquel, Pascal Briand, Yann Gueyader and other top skaters from France, but Nicolas Zamudio alias "Zamu", our new colombian team mate could not make it for the camp. Then we had our first GBC race in Germany but I did not compete there. So the team met in the hotel in Zug the day before the race. I think we have a very good team this year. It's a nice mix of "old school" skater like me with the young school guys like Zamu, Felix Rijhnen, Pascal Ramali, Kwinten Tas. For the GBC races we also have Martin Matyk, one of the strongest sprinter. It´s a cool mix. The morning before the race we went for a warm up all together and we spoke about our tactics for the race. The race started later in the afternoon. It was an easy start due to the yellow flag but right after the start the speed was very high already. For the first 15km the group was skating with an average speed of about 50km/h which made is almost impossible to break away. finally a group went out in the 1st uphill with many leader from different teams, but no one from our team followed at this time. The group in front didn´t work well together and the massive peloton of about 80 skaters came back easy and catched them after a few km. All teams seemed to be in very good shape and no one really made it to escape. So everybody prepared for a sprint finish. Kwinten Tas from the Powerslide Phuzion team lead for the sprint, but way to early... so we couldn´t really react when the other skaters jumped to the left part of the road. In the tunnel about 500m in front of the finish line, the Powerslide Phuzion team was blocked and no way to pass. We have to get a much betting timing, but as mentioned before, it´s a very young team. But I´m sure they will learn fast.

Powerslide Phuzion
Hi dear all , here is a picture of my new team for this season 08.
After race, it was the cool WIC party like always. Everybody had fun. Later at night it was time o go back home to rest before next training.
