New Year race in Erfurt (GER) !

Bart Swings (Jan. 2, 2011)

Today I had my first ISU race, one of the most important races of this winter. After 8 weeks of ice skating trainings we tried to qualify for the World Cup and the upcoming European Championships All-round. So the goal of today was to skate the 5km below 6min48sec. Together with Ferre, Wannes and my dad I drove to Erfurt for the race.

The past weeks went pretty good for me, I kept on training for the upcoming inline season but I tried to rest as much as possible and the last 3 days I only did some recovery practices to be in a good shape for this weekend. So no new Year party for me, I had a relaxed evening together with my girlfriend and went early to bed. But then it all went a little wrong, at 3 a.m. I had to wake up the first time and definitely not the last time, I had stomach flu and maybe slept 2 more hours that night. That was a little frustrating because the race was in 24hours.. At 8 in the morning we left to Erfurt so I tried to rest in the car. The trip to Erfurt went good, it only took us 5hours so at 2pm we could skate on the ice track in Erfurt. I didn’t do that much, just a little to get some ice feeling. Once we got in the hotel I took a shower, had one hour nap, had a good diner and went to bed. I wanted to be in the best possible shape I could be, even after the little sickness so I gave my body all the sleep it needed.

The next day I felt a lot better, my stomach wasn't yet the way it should be and I still had a small headache but I was able to race. I first had a 500m against my new CadoMotus teammate, Pascal Ramali, I opened in 10.8s and finished with a time of 39.35. Still had the usual problem like every 500m, I wasn't totally focused but my legs were feeling ok.

The 5K: only one goal this race, to skate below 6.48. I started the race immediately pretty good with 19.38 and 30.7. After that I tried to skate as long as possible below 32sec so I never got in real danger, I was able to keep on skating laps between 32s and 32.5s. I didn't really try to accelerate to the end of the race, I just was focusing to not make any faults, no crossing of the line or hitting a cone. And I succeed, I finished in 6.43 and qualified myself for the EC All-round in Collalbo which starts Friday 7 January. So the next two days I'm going to rest and try to recover from my illness, I leave Tuesday to Italy were I'm going to rest, get used to the ice track in Italy and in the meanwhile try to study as much as possible because my examinations are coming close too!

So the year has start alright for me, I hope for you too! I wish you all a happy New Year and a late Merry Christmas!

Bart Swings qualifies for EC allround!

(Jan. 3, 2011)
8 weeks of ice practice, and Bart Swings will compete at the European Championships in Collalbo next weekend.

With a 5k time of 6.43,13 ysterday in Erfurt (Germany), he comfortably finished within the qualification time of 6.48. The 500 meter he finished in 39,35.

Swings has been practising on the ice for only 8 weeks, since he returned from the World Inline Championships in Colombia, where he captured two gold medals, two silvers and one bronze.

"Time for a new adventure", said the 19-year old short after the World Championships in Colombia. Together with Ferre Spruyt and coach Marc Otter, he started learning to skate on ice very quickly.

While this season was meant to be for learning technique only, this Sunday he raced under the qualification times for the European Championships in Collalbo (Italy), which will be held next weekend.

"I started the race good with a 19.38 opener and a 30.7s lap. After that I tried to skate below 32s as long as possible and I never got in real danger. I was able to keep on skating laps between 32s and 32.5s. I didn’t really try to accelerate towards the end of the race, I was only focusing on not making any faults, no crossing of the line or hitting a cone.

"I leave to Italy on Tuesday, were I'm going to rest, get used to the ice track. In the meanwhile I try to study as much as possible because my exams are coming close too!"

Swings: "Not sure what to expect"

(Jan. 6, 2011)
The European Allround championships in Collalbo are about to start. It will be the first real ice adventure for Bart Swings.

Belgian press suddenly shows interest in their 19-year multi talent Bart Swings, who not only captured three World Titles on inlines already, but now switched to elite level ice skating within 8 weeks of serious practice.

National newspaper 'Het Nieuwsblad' interviewed Bart, who arrived in Collalbo on Wednesday to prepare for the races and get used to the ice conditions.

How did the race in Erfurt go?
I expected to skate under 6.48 honestly. But a few days before the race I got the flu, so I got a little nervous by that. During the race, soon I was right on schedule and towards the end of the race, I even had the energy to accelerate a little, though I didn't want to take to much risks.

What are your ambitions now for the European Championships?
I really have no idea what my times are worth at this level. It depends on the weather conditions also, as Collalbo is an outdoor rink. I did not set any high goals, but I would like to place top 18, so Belgium has 2 spots for next year's championships. Than Ferre Spruyt and/or Wannes van Praet could join me, the guys that I started this adventure with.

Your goal obviously are the Olympic Games...
That is how we have categorized our schedule, yes. With my ice coach Marc Otter, and with support of my sponsor CadoMotus, we mainly focussed on the technical aspects. Inline skating and ice skating look similar, but on some points very different also.

But after only two months of ice skating, I am doing better than expected. The next Olympics are in 2014 and I want to compete there. Another four years later, I want to be able to fight for medals. I'm not focussing on ice now just for fun, we want to perform.

How about inline skating?
As a reigning World Champion, I'm not going to give this up. But we have to make some different decisions now in the training program. After the World Championships in Colombia, I took one week of rest and then I went back into hard training for this new challenge. Physically, this matched quite good. But towards the Olympics, for sure I have to save some energy during the inline season.

EC video review with Bart Swings

(Jan. 12, 2011)
A few days after his debute at the European Championships in Collalbo, Swings and his team mates were at the CadoMotus office. Davide Mariani made casts for their new inline boots. A good opportunity to have a chat with our team leader.
