WORLD INLINE CUP Bern - race reportThe second stage of the Swiss Inline Cup 2010 was at the same time the second station of the World Inline Cup in Switzerland. After a three year’s absence, the tour stopped again in the Federal capital. The biggest and most beautiful tour village of the last few years was put up on the Bundesplatz which is covered with Vals quartzite flags measuring 60 x 100 cm and 6 cm thick and its famous fountain. The starting and finishing line was directly in front of the seat of government and the parliamentary building. Attractive for everybody, thus hundreds of interested people came there, already on Saturday. A light-band along the plaza creates an optical line from the Bärenplatz to the Bundeshaus. In the western part of the plaza 26 trick fountains symbolize the 26 cantons and half-cantons of the Swiss Confederation. Thanks to the local authorities and the Canton police of Bern, it was possible to organize such a top race in a very short time despite the insolvency of the former promoter Event-e-Motion AG in Switzerland. The youngest, the Kids, started the races running six laps around the Bundesplatz and the village. Even if the road surface was still a little bit wet, they pushed showing some duels with their competitors. The juniors had just arrived from the European Championships in the Italian town San Benedetto and were certainly everything but refreshed, forgot that they are tired as soon as the race had started and made a good pace on the two laps through the city of Bern. In the afternoon the highlight of the day, the races of the World Inline Cup with the world’s best athletes, followed after fun, fitness and popular sport. Apart from the Colombian stars Juan Nayib Tobon and Diego Rosero as well as the US superstar Joey Mantia the who is who of the inline scene was represented in Bern. The track was extremely selective and with its 46 kilometres longer than usual on request of the top skaters. After the starting line, a straight led through the Bundesgasse, then a tricky run with top speeds of almost 80 km/h over the Monbijou bridge along the picturesque city panorama. The track followed a slight ascent to the turning point at Berninaplatz and along the state archives back again making a hard steep climb via the US embassy to the Bundesgasse and the finishing straight. This track was very demanding for the athletes. However, they did the 9 laps and 46 km at an average speed of more than 40 km/h! The ladies had to do 6 laps which means a distance of 30.6 km. The circuit of 5.1 km was ideal for spectators and athletes, too and together with the backdrop of more than 20,000 enthusiastic spectators we saw an inline race of an extraordinary quality. The teams of the World Cup, Powerslide Matter World, Bont arena geisingen, IDEEprint X-Tech, Alessi World, Luigino Rollerblade, showed hard fights at top speeds of sometimes 60 km/h. Practically each team tried to have a lead over the others and sent its athletes to the top to set the pace or to break away alone. The guys from Luigino Rollerblade with the two Swiss top cracks Severin Widmer und Nicolas Iten showed again that they are very active and continued to be at the top due to their aggressive breakaways. But the overall leader, Yann Guyader, had an eye on everything, driving very clever tactically. Also the athletes of the BONT arena geisingen team were pushing the pedal to the metal but the attentive skaters from Portugal around the young and strong Diogo Marreiros didn’t let him break away. As even in the 9th lap no athlete had a lead over the others, everybody thought that a mass sprint would finish the race but they had not thought of the Frenchman from Powerslide Matter World. From an excellent position he spurted away on the finishing straight and outdistanced the others with a 10 m margin. A victory, that sent the spectators into raptures of joy. With his success in this spectacular top-class heat Yann had defended his leading position in the WIC 2010. The other positions: 2. Reyon Kay (NZL) BONT arena geisingen improving his position in the overall ranking with this race before the best Swiss of the Luigino Rollerblade World team, Severin Widmer. The Ladies didn’t drive as hectically as the men, but in a more tactical manner. Their six laps were characterized mainly by teamwork. They eyed each other, so that almost each action was neutralized and were not impressed by the racing speed train of the men. As practically no breakaways were possible it became clear that the Powerslide Matter World team and the overall leader, Cecilia Baena, would again be on the way to the victory. As usual, Nathalie Barbotin worked extremely hard for her team-mates and didn’t let anybody break away. Even the Alessi ladies as well as the ladies of X-Tech and Vitamine&Co-Ferrara had no successful breakaways. Therefore it came to a final spurt and – as almost usual - the Colombian top athlete Chechy from Powerslide Matter World won the palm before Giovanna Turcchiarelli (Alessi World) and the German Tina Strüver from the WorldInlineCenter BONT-Team The race was again directed by the excellent and supremely good Swiss referees around Stefan Neck. Now the WIC train can take a short rest before the next race in Gdansk (POL) at the Baltic See on 28 August. The Swiss Inline Cup has already come to its end with a fantastic and super organized racing event in Bern this year. Many thanks to all participants, sponsors and above all to the authorities and numerous helping hands making everything possible. We already look forward to the WIC 2011 with a new and very attractive race calendar. More information will follow in the next few weeks. We will keep going! World Inline Cup Bern 2010 Results
