Professional inline speedskating circuit coming to Pattison's WestBy CASEY OLSON (Jan. 18, 2010) Miguel Jose is hoping to bring the sport of inline speedskating into the mainstream.
The local businessman and avid speedskater recently created a new company called the National Speedskating Circuit (NSC), with the assistance of 26-time world inline champion, Joey Mantia. The NSC is now the only professional indoor inline speedskating organization in the world.
And it's getting started right here in Federal Way.
“The NSC is an attempt to bring inline speedskating into the limelight,” Jose said. “This is the best of the best. This is strictly for pros. We get the 12 best guys in the world and bring them here to Federal Way every two months.”
The inaugural NSC event is slated for 8 p.m. at Federal Way's Pattison's West skating center on Jan. 23. It will be the first in a five-race season, which will run through the summer.
Federal Way's Pattison's West is somewhat of a Mecca in the inline skating community. The skating center opened in 1979 and the Pattison's Team X-treme has produced several national champions. Current United States short track Olympians Apolo Ohno and JR Celski skated and trained at Pattison's West before shifting their focus to the ice.
The National Speedskating Circuit is coming to Pattison's West Skating Center on Saturday, Jan. 23.
The professional circuit includes 12 of the top inline skaters in the United States.
Tickets are available at www.pronsc.com. |
“Because inline speed skating doesn't get the publicity that ice speed skating does, we lose many of our quality athletes to it,” Jose said. “The NSC is an attempt to bring inline speed skating into the limelight.”
Each of the NSC's 12 athletes are either a sprinter or an endurance racer and will be vying for a $5,600 prize pool during every event. The 12-skater field consists of five sprinters and seven endurance athletes. The race distances include a 300-meter sprint, a 500 sprint, a 1000 endurance and a 1600 endurance event.
If a skater finishes in the top-three in points in either the sprint or endurance races, they move on to an 800-meter grand championship. At the end of each competition, someone will be crowned sprint champion, endurance champion and grand champion. All points lead to a final season winner in all three disciplines.
“The event follows more of a UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championships) vibe,” Jose said. “Each skater will have intro music. There is also alcohol at the event. It’s a great time.”
According to the organization's official Web site the NSC is “culture, it's competition, it's danger, it's sex appeal, it’s excitement, it’s flat-out hot, nasty speed.”
The 12 handpicked athletes hail from all over the United States, including hometown skaters Jeremy Anderson and Eben Jackson.
“The level of competition in NSC is crazy,” said racer Jason Steely, who won an exhibition event held in November at Pattison's West. “Even at indoor nationals do you rarely get the five fastest guys in one race. With NSC being handpicked, it's like a dream match. I can't wait to put on a show for everyone.”
Tickets for the Jan 23 NSC event are available online at www.pronsc.com for $18. Tickets can also be purchased at Pattison's West the day of the event for $22.

NSC Tribulation... Excellent racing... Excellent event!by excelsk8 (Jan. 23, 2010) Watching NSC that just finished I have to say we do have an amazing sport, that deserves to be bigger than it is, our athletes deserve a lot more recognition than they get, Now, I think that Miguel Jose, Joey and everyone involved are doing an amazing Job at what they are doing, but lets not forget that this events are made to get mainstream USA into our sport, with that said I'd like to say what I think from the point of view of a regular Joe, who doesn't know nor care about speed skating. - the first thing that come to mind: too much down time in between... I think that could hurt nsc... we want to be like nascar... they go for a mililon laps, people are watching the cars go by, go... have a beer ... come back, they are still going around, the action is still on! they go take a leak, come back its still on... we need less down time.
- Time trials: for skaters and skating lovers only! I love to watch the time trials, but then again I've been skating for the past 23 years, of course I love that, but if I were to watch a race? no way would I like to see a time trial, maybe two people, but after the first three it just gets lost in translation....
- The Announcing... not the best, we need Bob Justice there, he can't make it? then maybe Charlie from ATL he does a great job announcing the 10K classic, I think you need a kick A$$ DJ not just an average one, NOT to take anything from amazing Joe Colozo, but you need pro's to look like a pro specially to sound like one.
- Start of the races .. should be done by the announcer, not a monotone speaking starting referee... take your marks... boring you need to get the crowd on their feet!
- Track used: The NIRA track should be used in the races, by far more exciting to watch!
- number of racers: the races have too few racers in them, specially the sprints.
- I know this one will cause more controversy than it already has, but why does the NSC need a wheel sponsor? I think that we need the best of the best out there racing to make the debut of our sport into a bigger stage, why handicap the start of something great with this restrictions? every pro in the circuit should be good enough to have wheel sponsor, if this is true, then let skaters race with whatever they like best or whatever their sponsor gives them, that will make it more interesting! I think if everyone feels 100% in what they are wearing then it will make for much better racing overall, now if Hyper is paying and arm and a leg for that, then that would make sense!
- NSC is made to attract big companies to sponsor the skaters and the circuit, if this is true, why are not sponsor logos on the uniforms plastered all over like in nascar? what would a sponsor have to gain from sponsoring an athlete in NSC?
I know that being a critic is an easy job, putting stuff together is tough, believe me I know, but I also know that if all of us come here to this open forum and express what we think, maybe Miguel Jose can read and consider some of our points maybe something better comes out of it that helps NSC be what its mean to be! I see it going in the way that it needs to be, I for one have bought the live feed the past two events and plan on doing so every time! I love the sport and love this chance that Miguel Jose is giving our sport to shine! I hope everyone comes together and help him and his organization put speed skating in the map the way it so deserves!

HYPER-RACE 2010: NSC Tribulation... Excellent racing... Excellent event!
Opinions/Thoughts on NSCby SkateMO (Jan. 29, 2010) Just curious to hear some feedback, in regards to thoughts on NSC...My own opinion is that Joey (and team) has done a fantastic job putting this "racing series" together. I'm super impressed with the professionalism, from the level of competition, to the uniforms/website, to the overall presentation of the event...I think it's first class in every way. So, hats off to Joey and team...
However, my belief and "point of conflict" with NSC is that I personally don't believe that indoor skating has a place on a larger scale, especially on the international/world level. Thus, I have always been somewhat confused as to why so much attention is being placed on indoor events. Granted, indoor skating has a lot to offer. It's exciting, it helps develop some good skill sets, it's accessible, but overall, I don't think it has a place on the international level (especially, if inline skating ever makes it to the Olympics). My honest opinion is that indoor skating can give off a negative impression/image of our sport. It's hard to explain why I feel that way, but every time I watch an indoor race, it looks "awkward" and "out of place." For instance, you have world class skaters (big/strong skaters) racing around a track that looks way too small, with purple strobe lights and cotton candy machines in the background. In my honest opinion, it looks "amateurish." The skaters are amazing, but the overall "setting" doesn't do justice to their ability. I think that outdoor skating and even track skating is much more attractive, and is our only shot at an Olympic bid someday and growing the sport.
I may take some heat for this post, but it's 100% my honest opinion...
