Roller skiing on the increase

(Jul. 2, 2009)
Just because there’s no snow doesn't mean you can't ski. The sport of roller skiing is growing rapidly and is even recognised by FIS.

It is, so its enthusiasts say, just like the real thing. It is though not similar to downhill skiing, but it is like cross-country skiing.

Roller skiing is like rollerblading with the added help that you use poles to push yourself along.

A similar technique to cross country skiing is used and all you need is a tarmac path that is smooth and not to steep.

The BBC Sports reporter, Mike Bushell, has just made a short film about it’s apparent rise in popularity.

As the summer draws nearer, most people are turning from thoughts of winter sports in favour of frisbees, beach cricket and tennis.

It builds balance, coordination and strength. It can also help those preparing for Alpine skiing as it exercises many of the same muscle groups.

Here at the PlanetSKI office in London we have seen a number of people roller skiing in nearby Richmond Park this Spring and it certainly looks fun and good for fitness.

We will be having a got at it over the summer and will let you know how we get on.

It is a developed sport in the Scandinavian countries where they use it for summer training and also competition. It is fully recognised by the International Ski Federation (FIS) and not seen as a bit of a joke sport as some people view it in the UK.

The British army employs it as a method for endurance training and it uses an amazing 90% of the bodies muscles so is a pretty good way to keep fit too.

We look forward to bringing you a report from the ski slopes of Ricmmond Park later in the summer!
