OAP rollerblader in court appeal U-turn over right to skate in Southport

by Laura Jones (May 29, 2009)
ROLLERBLADING pensioner Geoff Dornan has backed out of an appeal court battle to defend his right to skate in Southport.

The OAP was due to appear before an appeal court judge today (Friday, May 29).

Mr Dornan, who had defiantly vowed to fight the magistrates' ruling in October, announced his dramatic decision less than 24 hours ahead of his Liverpool Crown Court date.

Mr Dornan was set to battle to overturn Southport magistrates' decision last year.

On October 3, Mr Dornan, 71, was landed with a bill of £2,092 in costs and court charges after being found guilty of breaking by-laws in Southport's Chapel Street.

Mr Dornan, who had widely publicised his fight to overturn Sefton Council's legal victory at appeal, yesterday said his change of heart was the result of advice from his solicitor.

Had he lost the case, Mr Dornan's total legal costs and fines were likely to total more than £7,000, which would force the Ormskirk skater to remortgage his house.

Mr Dornan, who counts an army of 2,447 Facebook supporters among his fans and has become a media sensation as a result of the extensive coverage of his case, said that he still wanted to see skating in Southport.

He told the Visiter yesterday that he was hoping the decision to back down would open a dialogue with Sefton Council.

Losing his appeal court battle could have cost the retired youth worker about £7,000, in addition to the £2,092 bill from the original court case.
