GIC Premier in Berlin with mixed results for the Powerslide Phuzion International Team

Powerslide Racing News (Apr. 07, 2008)
Traditionally the half marathon in Berlin opened the race season for the german speed skaters 2008. It was the start of the German Inline Cup (GIC) also and this year a lot of teams send their international skaters from all over the world to Berlin. It was a big showdown as the organizer expected concerning the big names on the registration list for the event.

The weather in Berlin was rainy the days before the race and started to dry out during the day which made it difficult for the athletes to choose the right wheels. Obviously the Powerslide men´s team chosed the wrong wheels for the race. They picked the softer rain wheels. It was ok for the first 10km of the race where the streets have been very wet. But later when the road became dry the wheels have been too slow and the team could not follow the high speed anymore. About half distance of the race a successfull breakaway started lead by Scott Aldrige (NZN) followed by Thomas Bucher (FRA) and Jorge Cifuentes (COL). These three skaters managed to escape also due to the effect that Felix Rijhnen and Nicolas Zamudio, who skated together for the first time in the Powerslide Phuzion team, had a misunderstanding about who should follow the breakaway. Kwinten Tas finally chased the leding group, but no one else followed and he had to work all by himself. Nicolas and Felix chosed the "wrong train" in the final sprint and ended up with the main pack ranking on position 14th (Nicolas) and 26st (Felix).

The race for the girls went better for the Powerslide Phuzion team. Young Sabine Berg who just won the Trois Pistes in France had a great race and took a sensationell silver close behind Hilde Goovart from NEL. Thats the same finish like half a year ago in the rain race of the Berlin REAL marathon 2007. The woman race was a more tactical race and pretty slow. Especially the last 5 km of the race no one wanted to lead the pack in order to safe energy for the final sprint. Sabine just missed the top of the podium by less than a second. Franziska Neuling finished with a great 10th place.

The next race will be in Zugersee / Switzerland on April 19th, the World Inline Cup (WIC) opening 2008. The Powerslide Phuzion men team will have their first race together in the "Premier League" of inline skating. The girls will not compete in this race.

Congratulations to Bine Berg for her great success in Berlin!

Berlin again for Goovaerts

Hilde Goovaerts takes another wet sprint victory in Berlin

Hilde Goovaerts has already claimed her second win of the season, in the first week of April in the European Spring. Not only was it raining in Berlin, but conditions were ice-cold for the event - not unusual in Germany in the Springtime, particularly when events regularly start in the early morning. The difficult conditions of the Vattenfal Berliner Half-Marathon saw both the mens and womens fields scattered on the course - and played into the hands of the experience Goovaerts - no stranger to the rain and cold, and certainly with the experience to take on her opponents in a breakaway situation.

Berlin has been a successful location for Goovaerts, winning the World-Inline-Cup finale at the Berlin Marathon in September 2007. The rain rarely poses a problem for Goovaerts, who overcame 6 other athletes in the lead break to take the win in a sprint finish - not unlike her 2007 Berlin victory where the young German Sabine Berg was again second.

Fellow CadoMotus team-member Jannita Spigt (NED) was 13th finishing immediately behind German Jana Gegner - a three-time winner of the event. Spigt also enjoys the wet conditions, and would have been smiling at the sight of adverse weather closing in as she is known for willing the rain to come down before her races - particularly on tough courses.
A familiar feeling in Berlin
