8-yr-old skates 1,800 km for cause

Posted: Apr. 10, 2008
She is all of eight years and has already travelled 1,800 km on skates! Vidhi Khandelwal began her journey on wheels on March 9 to campaign for the girl child who is not being allowed to be born. Daily she skates over 25 km, a gruelling mission that has caused painful boils on her feet, but this eight-year-old is indefatigable.

On Wednesday, the little champion of 'Save the Girl Child' cause reached Mehsana, a district with the lowest sex ratio of 801 girls per 1,000 boys in Gujarat, and skated along the bazaars of the city as part of a rally organised to create awareness on one of the most burning social issues in the state.

Starting from Delhi and reaching Gujarat, Vidhi, who is accompanied by her mother Anju, shared with TOI her numerous shocking experiences relating to the discrimination against the girl child, especially in Gujarat and Rajasthan.

"In Devra in Rajasthan, people justified the alarmingly dwindling number of girls saying that the water of the area was such that only boys were born here. I was very upset with this attitude," Vidhi, a class III student of Birla Vidyalaya in Delhi told TOI. The skating champion and her mother were briefed by voluntary organisations that people in that region were notorious for 'namak-peeti' where girl children were drowned in salt water.

In Gujarat, too, the team came across similar tales of women being discriminated against for bearing girl children. "In Himmatnagar, I met a lady who has been abandoned by her husband because she has given birth to two daughters. Her husband has apparently started living with another woman citing that his wife gives birth to only girls," says Anju.

Vidhi and her mother, who is president of Self Help Children Foundation and played a pivotal role in embarking on this ambitious skating marathon that is expected to continue all through April, say that their mission is also to adopt some needy girls.

Vidhi is expected to reach Ahmedabad on Friday.
