Skating by in LovelandHowley aims to help friend recovering from leukemia through fundraiser on wheelsBy Douglas Crowl (March 18, 2008) Chris Howley felt bad that he couldn't participate in a February fundraiser for his friend and co-worker, John Carter, who is recovering from leukemia. Carter has been out of work from Group Publishing in Loveland since August 2007 as he underwent chemotherapy treatments and a bone-marrow transplant. Howley lamented the situa-tion not long ago while on his weekly inline skating workout - skating from the Group Publishing building on Eisen-hower Boulevard to Boyd Lake and back. Howley then concluded that he must do something on his own. “This idea just started un-folding while I was on the trail,” Howley said. He decided to have his own fundraiser by collecting 25-cent-per-mile pledges for an epic 100-mile continuous inline skating trek - going from Group to Boyd and back four times, along with four trips around the Group’s parking lot to hit 100 miles exactly. He estimates that the skate will take about eight hours. "Why not try this? It's wacky enough, people just might support it,” Howley said. Indeed, if Howley finishes his 100-mile skate trip fund-raiser, called "Rollin' for Carter" on April 5, he'll raise more that $700. That is, of course, if he finishes. Howley skated 50 miles on Saturday, two trips back and forth between Group and Boyd, as a training run, which was highlighted by a warning by a Colorado State Patrol trooper not to skate on a highway. “It was a lot rougher than I thought it would be,” Howley said of the 50-mile trek. Howley has been endurance skating for three years and dropped 60 pounds after beginning the sport. In that time, he's participated in five marathon races, though he's never gone 100 miles before and he expects the experience won't be easy. Howley has at least one believer in his corner. "I think he can do it,” Carter said. “It's quite a spectacular thing to say you are going to step up and help someone out. It's phenomenal.” Carter has been cured from leukemia and hopes to get back to work as soon as his immune system is strong enough to fight off common viruses. But he said that may be later rather than sooner, depending on what the doctor says. Being away from work since August and paying for the expensive treatments has put the 44-year-old husband and father of two into a financial crisis. Carter's co-workers at Group Publishing have helped by creating the JC Leukemia Foundation and having a February dinner fundraiser. “My co-workers at Group Publishing have gone above and beyond to help me and my family in this challenging time,” Carter said. Now to have Howley step up as an individual to organize a fundraiser is another blessing, Carter said. “Make Chris the hero, this is not about me,” Carter said. Howley said he just wanted to help out and he felt that he had missed the previous opportunity. “The bottom line is, with a family to provide for and the devastation of leukemia, and the cost of the treatments, well it's just staggering,” Howley said. The long skate begins at 6:30 a.m. April 5. If it rains, he'll do it April 19. Howley will continue to raise pledges and train throughout the month for his big skate.
