Hilde Goovaerts - Leader, CadoMotus World Ladies

She is always smiling and there is no doubt she is the one of the skating World's favorite athletes. Hilde Goovaerts (pronounced Go-varts) simply loves skating and has put her heart and soul into the sport since she was just 5 years old. An ever-enthusiastic competitor, Hilde's smile has lit up tracks the World over, and she is a much-loved and respected member of the Marathon community. Hilde is rarely missing from any race within driving distance of her home in Belgium, and in Europe 'driving distance' can readily mean 12+ hours in the car - and when she's not racing, she's often a spectator who likes nothing more than to watch good racing and support her friends.

She may 'already' be 32 years old, but the forever-young Hilde has a list of career highlights the kind that other skaters dream about - thanks in no small part to the delight she takes in any skating experience. Whether on the World stage, or at a lesser-known European marathon or half-marathon event, she never gets bored of racing... and of course, winning!

Why did you start skating?
"I just loved doing it and I had some nice friends at the club"

Does the whole family skate?
"No, actually not. But there are a lot of people in our village that do it. We have a pretty large skating club (Reko Zemst), and that is where I started skating... on quads, not on inlines. Today I'm a member of ISC Eeklo, the club of World hour record holder Frank Fiers."

How do you manage to have so much fun in skating?
"The Dutch races are the ones I really love and I discoverd that in 2002. Since then I've been in some nice teams, with enthusiastic management. I wasn't used to that. First I've been in the Maple team, then Univé/Stouwdam and now CadoMotus. Every season I learn new things and that fascinates me. Also working with Desly Hill is awesome. For the past two years I've also been skating ice marathons - which is a nice combination for summer and winter. Ice skating stays difficult though, for a non-Dutch girl."

You won the biggest World Cup race of the season last year... Does that change your goals for the 2008 season?
"I had dreamed of winning a World Cup, but when it happens, it is still a big surprise. I did believe we could do it as a team, because we had the chance to race the whole WIC season. We know we can win now, but it does not really change my personal goals. I just try to do the best I can in every race. It's the biggest competition in the World, so it remains hard to win."

What is your best skating memory?
"Winning in Berlin. And although it's been a long time, being a World Champion is very special!" (Hilde won the World Championship 42km Marathon in Perth, Australia in 1995).

What is your worst skating memory?
"I'm not having such good memories of World championships in countries far away from Belgium. Except Australia!"
Hilde Goovaerts
What do you do besides skating?
"I'm a childrens teacher, of the 5 year old kids."

And now we hear that you want to be a mother?
"I would love to be, but we will see when it happens." (*smiles*)

Career Highlights:
1x World Champion (42km, Australia 1995)
6x European Champion
1x Gold at World Games
1x Bronze at World Games
1x Victory World Inline Cup (42km, Berlin WIC 2007)

Jannitta Spigt - CadoMotus/BOB National Ladies

Jannita Spigt, NEDYou won’t easily find another skater like Jannitta Spigt. Skaters like her certainly aren't a dime-a-dozen. So what is so special about this 25-year old? A couple of things set her immediately apart: for one, she LOVES to race in the rain - and 'the wetter the better'. Not only that, the tougher the race the more she likes it.

Combine adverse weather with a devious course (precisely the kind of condition that has most of us looking for an excuse NOT to lace-up), and Jannitta can barely contain her excitement. And rightly so, she's had her fair share of success in just these types of races - so its no surprise she has already won many Dutch championships in the famous double-marathon event in Hallum (the Hell of the North).

How did you start skating?
"In 1995 my father bought my first skates. I lived in Andijk back then, close to the track in Medemblik. I did my first race there short after. I became second, behind Mariska Huisman (current World Team member). I liked it a lot and the next season I raced all races I could."

You have a skating family?
"Yes, my 3 sisters all skate as well, both ice and inline. One of them, Yvonne, became national champion on natural ice this winter. My parents also like sports a lot."

What is your best quality as a skater?
"I don’t give up. Races cannot be tough enough for me... and I like rain! Attacking is my cup of tea, so the race should be as tough as possible."
