Roller Sports in the Programme of the 2010 Asian Gamesby Luca Minelli (June 06, 2007) The 50th OCA Executive Board meeting, held in Almaty under the chairmanship of HE Sheikh Ahmad Al-Sabah, President OCA (Olympic Council of Asia), decided that Roller Skating will be included in the sports program of the Guangzhou 2010 Asian Games.
A STEP CLOSER TO OLYMPIA....
May 28th, 2007 is to be remembered as one of the most important dates for Roller Sports in its march to Olympia, in other words, to the inclusion in the Programme of the summer Olympic Games. In that very day the 50th OCA Executive Board meeting, held in Almaty under the chairmanship of HE Sheikh Ahmad Al-Sabah, President OCA (Olympic Council of Asia), decided that Roller Skating will be included in the sports program of the Guangzhou 2010 Asian Games.
This enormous achievement is to be considered as an enthusiastic result part of a massive operation leading to the participation of the Roller Sports disciplines in all continental and international events recognised by the IOC, and thus to a world visibility.
A fundamental key in this great operation was undoubtedly the intervention of Dr. Mario Pescante, IOC Member and good friend of the FIRS President Hon. Sabatino Aracu, through a letter sent to HE Sheikh Ahmad Al-Sabah, President OCA, supporting the introduction of the Roller Sports in the Asian Games.
"We are assisting to a huge growth of the Roller Sports in Asia, under all aspects, technical, number of participants and, particularly, as concerns the organising skills. The decision of the OCS Executive Board is a tribute to the extraordinary values expressed by the Asian skaters and, at the same time, a clear message revealing the importance of our sports at international level.
In a few weeks time the FIRS President shall attend the 119th IOC Session at Guatemala City, with the main goal of promoting our sport with the top managers of the world's sport movement and possibly, to meet the IOC President, Comte Jacques Rogge, and talk about the gerat developments of rollersports all over the world.

Roller Sports came from the ice skating. In 1863, New Yorker James Plimpton solved the problem of controlling skates, he used a rubber cushion to anchor the axles. Plimpton's design is considered the basis for the modern roller skate. From then on, roller sports have been wildly spreading all over the world. It’s the first time that roller sports became a competition sport in Asian Games in Guangzhou Asian Games, 2010.
Roller sports include speed skating and artistic skating in Asian Games. The two categories are very popular. Speed skating is spectacular, fast and easy, only a road or a street and a pair of roller skates are needed. Artistic skating is a widely practiced sport which demands a careful balance of strength, precision and artistry.
