 The FIC Val d'Europe
FIC 2006
The French Inline Cup will join 12 stages all over France

The French Inline Cup will start in April in South of France for five months – from April to October - of twelve marathons. This season, the FIC becomes wider with new stages in East and Center of the country. There also will be changes to make the marathons clearer and the teams welcoming more efficient.

The 12 stages
The season of the FIC will start in April with about two (or three) marathons per month, which permits a better balance between preparation and rest of athletes.
 French Inline Cup
1 - April
The first marathon will take place in the sunny city of Nîmes, South-East of France, on April the 2nd: there will be four Fench world champion to take the start (Gicquel, Briand, Boucher and Contin) and the best french national teams (Nantes Atlantique Roller and MAS Rollerblade France). The circuit is a 3,7km loops circuit on closed roads (completely securised), quite plane but with three short and physical up hills.

One step higher: the FIC Val d'Europe, on April the 22nd. This race is also a WIC stage and will be raced all around the famous Eurodisney Resort, near Paris. The circuit is a plane loop around the Parc which is 10kms long. There will be no major difficulty for skaters – the ground is completely smooth too... For commercial reasons, the skaters will only race 21kms (a half marathon). But there will be a big party right after the race under the Disney Dome, all the night through!
 French Inline Cup

2 - May
May is an important month for the FIC's calendar, with three main stages in North and West of the country. First of all, the also WIC Top Class of Rennes sur Roulettes will take place on May the 7th in the Western city where it "traditionally" rains... The circuit remains the same and let's hope the weather's conditions will be better this year!

Then the skaters will have to travel towards the North for the fourth stage of Roller In Lille-Métropole: the circuit is a city circuit too, very technical and, as in Rennes, with lot of interested spectators all around. The are usually many Belgium and Netherlander skaters in Lille (it's near the border) and last year, some international stars (Tamara Llorens and Jorge Botero won the last year's marathon).

Last travel in May, but not the less beautiful: the Goëlo Roller Nature. This marathon in the wild region of Bretagne, near the see, is one of the most panoramic. Usually, it's a race that's liked by the athletes because the circuit looks like a track's one (same sensations) but the up hills gives it a physical aspect.

3 – June
June is the last month before the summer break. It is the month of one of the biggest FIC and one of the new FIC. One of the biggest, it's the Roller Marathon of Dijon (10th and 11th). On a city loops of 2kms (just two straight lines and two big corners), the show is constent, either for spectators or for skaters! This marathon is also a WIC one and consecrated the last two seasons the best skaters of the world (Shane Dobbin and Luca Saggiorato for example).

The new Marathon of the Volcans is tabulated on the 25th: it's a Class 2 of the FIC and takes place in the city of Clermont-Ferrand, just in the Center of France. This new stage is a city center race on a closed circuit in the town. Then, it will be time for skater to take a break... Or to prepare for international rendezvous such as the European championships or the 24 Hours of Le Mans race!

4 – September
Back to the FIC just on the beginning of September! The first marathon is a FIC Classe 2 and can be considered as a preparation for the last stages of the french national series. The Marathon of the Three Valleys is a twon to town marathon around the village of Saint-Chéron, near Paris, and throught the beautiful forests of the region (Rambouillet). It's a physical 42kms, with many long up hills and the last one for the arrival.

One week later (on the 11th of September), the FIC will go to an important city of roller skating in France, Rouen. The North-West city will be a FIC Classe 2 and will organize for the second year in a row a marathon around the bridges over the Seine River. This marathon is a plane one but the wind and the road give it a specific degree of difficulty.

And the last marathon of the FIC in September is the Trans'roller (16th and 17th), in the Jura region (East of France). For many years now, it has been one of the most appreciated marathons of the french series, wil spectacular and natural landscapes (forests, mountains and lakes), very good supporters and selective up hills.

5 – October
In October comes the big finale of the FIC in the Vendée region. The so specific Vendée Roller Marathon of les Herbiers (1st of October) is always won by exceptional athletes, who have to fight against the wind, the rough roads and the very, very big up hills. Last year, it was FIC's president Arnaud Gicquel who took the victory: sometimes, history do it well!

But this season, the VRM will not be the ultimate stage: two weeks later (on the 15th of October), the FIC goes for the last week-end in the East of France for a Classe 2 marathon in the city of Besaçon. This marathon will be a city center one, on a closed and plane circuit.

What's new for athletes and spectators?
First of all, the FIC's organisation decided to give the leaders of the provisional rankings significative jackets: one for the Elite women and men's leaders, one for the Junior leader and one for the best sprinter. So, the races will no doubt be clearer for spectators: they will at least be able to follow the leaders and also their main opponentes!

The FIC's organisation will give to national teams a tent to prepare themselves and let their stuff. It will all be simplier for these official teams: special files to take the numbers and the chips, free drinks and free food, but also official presentation and official cards for supporters!

As for last seasons, the French Inline Cup will be followed by national and regional medias such as the main TV channels Sport+, France Television and Eurosport, but also radios (RMC Europe 2, Fun Radio, NRJ...), newspapers (Ouest-France, Nice Matin, Télégramme, Lille Métropole Info, 20 minutes...) and Magazins (l'Equipe, Sports, FHM, Men's Health, Sport et Vie, Rollerskate Magazine, Roller-Infos, Sport Insider, L'Equipe Magazine). You will at least follow this national event on the official websites (www.sport-up.fr and www.roller-service.com ) and the official and free magazin (Roller-Infos).

So see you soon on the french roads!

Maxime from France RB in Second (Ladies race report also online)

Tanya Dobbin, 22.04.2006

By Vincent Esnault
Maxime Provost (MAS Rollerblade France) managed to take a wonderful second place on the second stage of the World Inline Cup (Class 1), also second stage of the French Inline Cup. The marathon was skated near Disneyland Resort Paris, on a plane and fast circuit. Baptiste Grandgirard and Angèle Vaudan (Rollerblade World) couldn't take advantage of the race and finished in the massive sprint.

The men's race started quite fast and was controlled by major WIC teams such as MMCmicro Salomon, Powerslide or Inline Center. But national teams also made them work, taking the lead (Vincent Esnault, MAS Rollerblade France) or going into escapees (Esnault again, also his team mate Damien Cochet).

The pace was still very imposant at three laps before the end, just after the last intermediate sprint: they were still about 70 to confront for what appeared to be a massive sprint... It should have been a massive sprint according to the will of the big teams. But the tempo went lower in the last lap, which permitted to a seven men group to go. Maxime Provost, leaded out by Antoine Jacquier, was in with Australian Daniel Finster (Inline Center), Julien Sourriseau (Loops Racing), Nicolas Pelloquin (Roll'X) or also Thomas Desplanches (ASTA Nantes).

The group took about 100m to the pace. Maxime, Sourisseau and Finster decided to go away again under the red flame, whereas Alexis Contin (Powerslide) was started to chase them. The pace was still preparing the massive sprint behind, with Julien Despaux fighting for his place in the wheels of the world best sprinters Saggiorato or Boucher.

But the pace couldn't manage to catch back the breakers! Daniel Finster arrived alone for the win, ten meters in front of Maxime and ten other meters in front of Contin. The massive sprint was won by Massimiliano Presti (MMCmicro Salomon); Julien finished at the tenth rank of this sprint.

For their second race all together, the team of MAS Rollerblade France managed to build a succesfull tactic and to race with intelligence. Maxime showed he was confident in the breaks, such as Damien, Antoine and Vincent; Julien was able to take his place in the big lanes of the teams. They knew they could have make a good race but it was not so easy to find the "open window" in a WIC race. Now it's done and the team mates will race the coming marathons with new ambitions!

For the Ladies:

The second stage of the World Inline Cup was skated near Disneyland Resort Paris, on a plane and fast circuit. Baptiste Grandgirard and Angèle Vaudan (Rollerblade World) couldn't take advantage of the race and finished in the massive sprint. Andrea Haritchelhar and Nadine Gloor (Athleticum Rollerblade) also took part of the race and adopted the same tactic.

In the women's race, Angèle was the only one of the team of Rollerblade World: her goal was then to stay attentive at each mouvement of the pace and try to take the good line for the final sprint. But the race was not quite at all.

It went out very fast in the 20 first kilometres, with numerous attacks from the teams of Salomon Smartskate, Alessi Powerslide or Crisalp Ladies. The very first to attack was Nadine Gloor (Athleticum Rollerblade) in the first kilometre of race. But the teams of Alessi Powerslide and MM 70 Luigiono wanted to control the pace in order to prevent from any escapee: it was on to succeed. And when it finally seemed to go cooler, some lonely skaters tryed to break!

Nathalie Barbotin (Salomon Smartskate) made the first mouvement and managed to go away alone at two laps to the end (about 7km). The only one to immediatly react was Nadine, but she was caught back in very fast... Barbotin sustained her strong effort against the pace and the wind and was on to be joined by Anne-Claire Maillard (K2/Pierre-qui-Roule), who escaped when the bell rang. But Maillard was swallowed back in at 150m from the finish... And only Barbotin was able to cross the line alone, and victoriously, for few meters.

Behind her, and very close to her, the fight was hard in the pace for the places on the podium: finally, Italian sprinters Simona di Eugenio (MM 70 Luigino) and Cinzia Ponzetti (Crisalp Ladies) managed to take the silver and the bronze. Angèle finished in this massive sprint at the seventh rank, Andrea Haritchelhar just one place behind her.

For the leader of the team of Rollerblade World, it was not a good result, even if she confort her ranking at the WIC provisionnal. She was not able to go in each attempts of breakaway and at the end had to wait for the sprint. But a massive sprint is not that much easy when you're alone. This race prooves that a victory or a good race depend not only on good finishers but also on a good team, with team mates who can lead out and some others who can protect. It prooves that inline speed skating is definitivelly a team sport made of individualities and that the team of Rollerblade World is a good balance between these personalities! They will show it next week in Basel for sure!
